Dr. Bonkowske graduated from the Biochemistry Honors Program and earned a Bachelor degree in Biochemistry with Phi Eta Sigma Honors from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He then obtained his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columubia School of Medicine.
Following medical school, Dr. Bonkowske, completed an internship at the University Of Missouri Department Of Internal Medicine. Dr. Bonkowske completed an ophthalmology residency at Wake Forest University, where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed a comprehensive one-year fellowship in cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery at the Dean McGee Eye Center at the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Bonkowske joined Morganton Eye Physicians, P.A. in July 2011.
