Custom Ablation, or PRK, is performed with the Excimer laser. In this procedure the epithelium, the thin layer of protective skin that covers the cornea, is gently removed. The laser is then used to reshape the surface of the cornea to correct vision.
Following the procedure, a special contact lens is placed over the treated eye for 3 to 7 days to allow a new layer of epithelium growth over the treated area. Functional vision typically returns within the first week. Custom Ablation is an excellent surgical alternative for those patients with thin corneas.
