Laser Vision Correction
Morganton Eye Physicians is pleased to offer laser services to
improve refractive errors. A refractive error is an irregularity
in the way light passes through the eye. Normally, light passes
through the clear cornea and is focused in a single point on the
retina. With a refractive error, light rays do not bend to achieve
a single focal point on the retina. The result is blurred vision
and a lifetime of dependency on corrective lenses.
However, people with active lifestyles are enjoying a new kind
of freedom that allows them to depend on their eyes...not on their
glasses or contact lenses. An exciting and extremely effective outpatient
procedure called LASIK can correct even the most severe prescriptions.
In its second decade of use, Lasik technology uses the precision
and sophistication of the excimer laser to reshape the cornea, allowing
light rays to focus more precisely on the retina, thereby reducing
refractive errors.
Laser Vision Correction can reduce or even eliminate dependence
on corrective lenses. The remarkable technology of LASIK only takes
seconds to treat a lifetime of nearsightedness, farsightedness,
and astigmatism. The advanced technology of the Excimer laser offers
an unparalleled degree of precision, control and safety to the surgical
correction of vision errors.
The Lasik procedure is safe and effective because it is performed
under a protective layer of corneal tissue. After the eye is numbed
with topical drops, a special instrument creates a thin protective
flap in the cornea. The flap is gently lifted and folded back while
the excimer laser reshapes the cornea. Immediately following the
laser the flap is closed and is sealed instantly without the need
for stitches.
The excimer is a "cool" laser beam that will not damage
any surrounding eye tissue. The higher the prescription, the longer
the laser procedure takes; however, it generally takes no longer
than 20 minutes to perform Lasik surgery on both eyes! Because there
is minimal surface area to heal there is less chance of scarring
and patients report minor post-operative discomfort. The results
are truly amazing.
Andrew C. Davis, MD,
a specialist in laser vision correction, is now performing the Lasik
procedure at the outpatient surgery center of Morganton Eye Physicians,
P.A. Dr. Davis combines his surgical skill with precision laser
technology to perform LASIK. Dr. Davis is an experienced Lasik refractive
surgeon with an impressive success record. We invite you to discover
Lasik and the world beyond glasses and contact lenses!
