Comprehensive Eye Exams
Early detection is the best way to protect your vision from permanent
damage caused by diseases, aging, and injuries. Preventive, comprehensive
eye examinations are the key to early detection of sight threatening
conditions. At Morganton Eye Physicians, preventive eye examinations
are available to the entire family!
During a comprehensive eye exam near and distance vision is checked.
This visual assessment may identify the need for eyeglasses
or contact lenses. In addition to visual
acuity testing, the eye doctor will also check muscle function for
proper coordination. Muscle defects are treatable; however, the best
treatment is early intervention.
An external part of the eye exam includes testing the pressure inside
the eye for signs of glaucoma. Glaucoma
is a leading cause of blindness because the disease is progressive
and may not have obvious symptoms. The eyelids, tear ducts, and cornea
are also examined. A comprehensive eye exam also includes a painless
evaluation of the internal structure of the eye. The optic nerve,
as well as the retina, is examined
for early signs of diseases and disorders. To detect the presence
of cataracts, the lens of the eye
is examined with a special light called a slit lamp. Preventive medical
care can help protect your eyes from permanent visual loss.
Certain eye diseases do not cause symptoms for several months or
even years; therefore, it is imperative that you schedule regular
exams with an eye care professional. Loss of sight may preventable;
however, good eye health and clear vision is dependent upon your
actions. Routine eye examinations are a proactive approach to
good eye health!
